The great Indian epic, the Mahabharata, was written by sage Vyasa. It's one of the three holy Hindu texts, along with Vedas and Upanishads. The writing is both in Sanskrit and in classical Prakrit form which has been translated into more than 40 Indian languages. Bharata Muni compiled stories from all four traditional Vedas - Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda - to create this master piece of literature. It is called the Mahabharata because it contains two 'great' epics - one of krishna and one of Arjuna. The Mahabharata is one of the most famous feats in human history, along with the Iliad and Odyssey in Greek mythology. The events in the epic happen over a period of over a thousand years. It narrates mythological stories from past times before 3000 BCE, at a time when society's values and language were different from those found in today's Hinduism. The caste system, dowry system, etc., are non-existent in the Mahabharata. The characters of the epic were mostly Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas.(ref: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (3-2-3)) Contemporary situations like war, politics, economics, relationship between parents and children in contemporary Indian families are also well-explored in the Mahabharata. It was translated in English along with the translation of the Srimad Bhagavatam by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The Mahabharata consists of 18 Parvas or sections. Originally these sections were independent booklets. The Parvas recount the story of the Bharata dynasty, whose scion Bhishma was a warrior. It traces the history of the Kurus and Panchalas, as well as that of other contemporary kingdoms like Matsya and Dasarna. It also tells us about their capital cities and gods they worshipped. Mahabharata is divided into 18 parvas (sections), each parva is named after a character/place and these Parvas contain several hundred chapters (Adhyayas). All together, there are nearly 100 million words in Mahabharata (roughly equalling 3 to 5 times the amount written in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey combined). The word 'Mahabharata' means 'the great Bharata'. It is also called Shree Bharata, the name of one of the Indian names for India. The Mahabharata contains almost all Hindu scriptures. The information about the composition of the Mahabharata is given in Adiparva (146.70 - 147.4). It is said that Vyasa was an incarnation of Dattatreya, the trinity formed by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. cfa1e77820
